Two New Programs Focusing on State Early Childhood Policy

Policy decisions focusing on children and families take place at the state level as well as at the federal level. To explore the possibility of extending its longstanding post-doctoral fellowship program focusing on federal child and family policy, the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) is excited to be piloting two new state policy programs in the 2017-2018 academic year:

Planning for these pilot programs has been carried out by SRCD’s Committee for Policy and Communications in collaboration with the University-Based Child and Family Policy Consortium (Consortium). This work reflects the newly formalized collaboration of SRCD and the Consortium.

The goal of these programs is to provide participants at different levels of study and career development with firsthand experience in state policymaking, program implementation, and evaluation, while also providing state Executive Branch agencies greater access to child development research expertise. Academic mentors for those participating in both the pre- and post-doctoral pilot programs are expected to have backgrounds relevant to, and interest in extending, their research on state early childhood policies and programs. Participants and mentors will be asked to provide input to SRCD to assess whether and how best to continue these pilot programs in the future.
