American Indian and Alaska Native children are affected by childhood obesity at some of the highest rates in the country. Let’s Move! in Indian Country (LMIC), a subprogram of an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, seeks to end childhood obesity in a generation. LMIC uses comprehensive strategies that engage Tribal governments, Urban Indian Centers, private businesses, youth leaders, and the non-profit sector with the goal of ending childhood obesity in a generation.
On November 17, CNAY staff participated in a working meeting with federal and nonfederal partners who provided a status update on their LMIC efforts, discussed challenges and successes of those initiatives, and worked together to create a plan for sustaining LMIMC efforts. First Lady Michelle Obama offered remarks in which she thanked partners for their dedication at both the community and national levels.
