This Gen-I NOW message provides information about the 2015 Young Native Writers Essay Contest and Scholarship!

The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Indian Education Association, sponsors an annual essay contest inspired by its goal of promoting education and creating new opportunities for youth.

The Young Native Writers Essay Contest is a writing contest for Native American high school students designed to encourage young Native Americans to write about their experiences as a member of a Native American community and the culture that inspires them.

The 2015 prompt is “Images of Native America.” Applicants should write an essay of no more than 1,200 words that focuses on one or more of the cultural images, symbols, or art forms that have been historically utilized by their communities.

Five First-Place Winners will each receive an expense-paid trip to Washington DC, to visit the National Museum of the American Indian and other prominent sites as part of Scholar Week (July 20-24, 2015). In addition, each winner will receive a scholarship of $2,500 to be paid directly to the college or university of his or her choice.

Eligibility Requirements

  • High School Student (Grade 9-12) 
  • Significant or Current relationship with a Native American Community (i.e. an American Indian tribe, an Alaska Native community or a Native Hawaiian community.)
