Senator Dorgan and the Center’s Staff Visit Pine Ridge Indian Reservation

On May 9-10, Senator Dorgan and the Center’s staff traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to meet with youth, program staff, and tribal council members. Senator Dorgan introduced the Center’s work to over 150 high school students during a school assembly at Pine Ridge High School. Additionally, the Center held small youth roundtables at both Red Cloud and Pine Ridge high schools to learn firsthand the about challenges and successes facing young people on the reservation. Senator Dorgan and Center also had the opportunity to meet with tribal council members to hear about their concerns related to their tribal youth. Key program staff in the community also discussed their successes and challenges, as well as opportunities for collaboration, during a separate roundtable event.
The trip to Pine Ridge was a success and we learned a lot from community members and youth. We were especially inspired after hearing from the young tribal members about their hopes and goals for both themselves and their communities!
